What Is Bacteriostatic Water?

Bacteriostatic water (BAC water) is sterile water for injection that contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. The addition of benzyl alcohol inhibits the growth of most bacteria and fungi, which is why the same vial can be accessed multiple times without significant risk of microbial contamination between uses — hence the name “bacteriostatic.”
In peptide research, BAC water is the standard reconstitution solvent for lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptide compounds. It is used to dissolve the powdered peptide into a stable liquid solution for research use. TrueCanPeptides offers BAC water in two formats: 3mL vials and 30mL vials.
BAC Water vs. Sterile Water
Sterile water and bacteriostatic water are not interchangeable in research settings, and understanding the difference matters for planning.
- Sterile water: Contains no preservative. It is sterile at the point of manufacture, but once the vial is accessed and the septum is punctured, the sterile water becomes vulnerable to microbial contamination from the air and handling environment. Sterile water is generally intended for single-use applications.
- Bacteriostatic water: Contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol. This preservative remains active after the vial is opened, providing ongoing bacteriostatic protection during multi-access use. BAC water vials can typically be accessed multiple times over their indicated shelf life without the same contamination risk that affects plain sterile water.
For peptide research — where a single reconstituted vial is often accessed multiple times — BAC water is the appropriate choice in most protocols. Single-use sterile water may be appropriate in specific research designs where benzyl alcohol compatibility is a concern for a given compound or assay.
BAC Water vs. Saline
Normal saline (0.9% sodium chloride solution) is a common laboratory and clinical liquid, but it is not used for standard peptide reconstitution. Here’s why:
- Saline is 0.9% NaCl in water: The sodium chloride content can interact unfavorably with certain peptide sequences, potentially causing aggregation, precipitation, or reduced stability in some compounds.
- BAC water is 0.9% benzyl alcohol in sterile water: The benzyl alcohol provides preservation without the ionic interference that saline can introduce.
- pH considerations: BAC water is typically pH-neutral or slightly acidic, which is generally compatible with peptide solubility. Saline’s ionic environment can alter the effective solubility of some peptides.
Unless a specific research protocol explicitly calls for saline as a vehicle, bacteriostatic water remains the preferred reconstitution solvent for research peptides.
Why BAC Water Is Used in Peptide Research
The multi-use preservation property of BAC water makes it particularly well-suited for the practical realities of peptide research:
- Multiple access events per vial: Research protocols often require multiple aliquots from a single reconstituted peptide vial. BAC water allows repeated needle entry without the same contamination risk as plain sterile water.
- Extended usable window: A reconstituted peptide solution made with BAC water is generally considered usable over a longer period than one made with plain sterile water, assuming appropriate refrigerated storage.
- Widely validated: BAC water is the standard referenced across published peptide research literature for lyophilized peptide reconstitution. This consistency matters for reproducibility in multi-study research programs.
- Benzyl alcohol compatibility: Most research peptides are compatible with benzyl alcohol at 0.9% concentration. Researchers should verify compatibility for specific compounds if there is reason to believe otherwise.

Choosing the Right Volume

- 3mL BAC water vials: Appropriate for researchers reconstituting one or a small number of peptide vials. A 3mL vial provides sufficient volume for typical 2–10mg peptide reconstitution without excess reconstitution solvent that would sit unused.
- 30mL BAC water vials: Better suited for larger research programs reconstituting multiple peptide vials, or where consistent batch provenance of the solvent itself matters. The larger format also reduces the number of individual vial access events for the BAC water itself, and typically offers a lower per-mL cost.
Choosing the right BAC water volume is a practical logistics decision tied to the scale of your research program.
Storage of Bacteriostatic Water
BAC water should be handled and stored according to the manufacturer’s guidance. General research-setting best practices:
- Unopened vials: Store at controlled room temperature, away from light and heat. Follow the expiry date on the vial.
- After opening: BAC water vials that have been accessed should typically be stored refrigerated (2–8°C) and used within the timeframe indicated on the product or per your lab’s SOPs. While benzyl alcohol provides bacteriostatic protection, refrigeration slows any potential degradation of the water’s properties over time.
- Light protection: Benzyl alcohol is somewhat light-sensitive over extended periods. Store in a dark or light-protected location when possible.
- Do not freeze: BAC water should not be frozen. Freezing can cause the benzyl alcohol to separate or precipitate.
